Planning the Perfect Memorial Day Cookout

On May 28, we’ll celebrate Memorial Day, remembering the servicemen and woman who gave their lives for our country. Spending time with family and friends gives meaning to this special day, and hosting a cookout is a great way to do that while kicking off the summer season.

We provide everything you need to make your cookout a success, from party supplies to the cleaning supplies you’ll need at the end of the day. Follow these tips to plan and host a great cookout:

1. Set the location, date and time.

The weather can be tricky on Memorial Day, so keep a backup plan in mind in case of rain. Set a start time so your guests know when to arrive, and set an end time or leave it open-ended if you don’t mind entertaining partygoers until the wee hours.

2. Plan your menu.

Food takes center stage at a Memorial Day cookout! Fill your menu with seasonal and traditional favorites and include a variety of foods so everyone can enjoy the meal regardless of allergies or dietary preferences.

Set out appetizers to tide people over until the main event. We love chips and salsa, veggies and dip (especially cherry tomatoes, celery and cucumber!), fruit bowls and mixed nuts.

For the main course, grill up traditional favorites like hot dogs and hamburgers, or go a step further and offer up BBQ chicken or steaks. If you have vegetarians in your crowd, consider throwing on a couple of veggie burgers or some portobello mushrooms. Serve up sides like macaroni or potato salad, chips, pickles and a fresh garden salad with rolls. Don’t forget plenty of condiments, like ketchup, mustard, relish, mayo, onions and cheese!

For dessert, keep it simple by serving a fruit bowl, cookies or brownies.

Quench your guests’ thirst by offering a variety of beverages, like lemonade, punch, water, soda, ice cold beer and juice for the kids.

3. Invite your guests.

Depending on your crowd and the formality of the event, you can invite guests in person, via phone, by mailing out invitations or by creating an e-vite.

4. Prepare your home.

Stock up on cleaning supplies in Danville to get your home ready for the big event. Focus on getting your restrooms spic-and-span and vacuuming, dusting and mopping. Outside, mow the lawn and set up tables and chairs.
